Denmark: Danish School of Media and Journalism Exchange

Overview 

The Scripps College of Communication School of Visual Communication is proud to announce its new exchange program with the Danish School of Media and Journalism (DMJX) in Aarhus, Denmark.  

DMJX is a fusion of two Danish institutions in located Aarhus and Copenhagen. The Aarhus location offers degrees in Journalism, Photojournalism and Communication. DMJX has a stellar reputation among photojournalists, producing a high number of award-winners in the field. The application process is rigorous, and during their studies, students are exposed to both Danish and international experts. 

In spring 2020, DMJX will be relocating to a brand new building featuring state-of-the-arts facilities. 

Aarhus is Denmark's second-largest city and is a lively cultural hub. In addition to DMJX and other smaller institutions, Aarhus is home to Aarhus University. The city center has a bustling pedestrian boulevard with shops, restaurants and bars. The Aarhus Art Museum (ARoS) is a must-see. You can also visit a large open-air folk museum, a Viking museum, attend concerts or other entertainment events. 

Living Arrangements 

DMJX will support exchange students with finding housing in private accommodations in the city of Aarhus. Students cook their own food and/or eat in university cafeterias and restaurants.

Actual dates will vary based on host institutions academic calendar, but below are estimated timeframes.

• Fall Semester: September – January  
• Spring Semester: January – June 

Study Away and COVID-19

During the COVID-19 Pandemic, participation in study away and abroad involves real and potential personal, financial and academic risk.

Academics  

Participants will enroll full-time in courses alongside Danish and international students. Courses will be taught in English and students will receive transfer credit for their coursework abroad.

Recommended Pre-Departure Course: INST 1001 

All students participating in an OHIO Exchange Program are encouraged to take INST 1001 "Cross-Cultural Preparation for Study Abroad" the semester prior to departure. Read more about  INST 1001

Cost

Items that are not related to the program (i.e., additional entertainment, souvenirs, extra travel, contingency funds) are not included in the cost estimates provided and should be budgeted for separately.  

*Note: 

• Non-resident surcharge waived for the credit hours associated with this program. 
• If you are nominated to this program, you will be required to pay a deposit to confirm your participation. The deposit is a down payment on the total costs to be billed by OHIO and is determined by the total cost of the program.

Eligibility and Requirements 

The DMJX exchange program gives preference to undergraduate VisCom students majoring in photojournalism. Students in other Scripps College majors are also encouraged to apply and may be considered, if space permits. Applicants should have an overall GPA of 3.0 or above and should plan to travel spring of sophomore year, fall of junior year, or spring of senior year.  

Students who will be on probation at any point during the program for a conduct offense that took place less than a calendar year from the program start date may not study abroad. Read the entire conduct policy. 

This program does not accept Non-OHIO students. 

To be considered for this program, participants must have a at least a high school diploma or the equivalent (e.g. GED) by the start date of the program. Additionally, students should have completed one year of college by the time of travel. Students enrolled in College Credit Plus (CC+) are not eligible for study away programs.

Entry and Exit Requirements 

U.S. citizens are required to have a valid U.S. passport when traveling outside of the United States. If you plan to study or travel abroad in the next year,  apply for your passport  now. Some countries also require a visa to legally enter or reside in the country. 

 Students on the Denmark Exchange program who are US citizens are required to apply for a residence permit in order to reside in Denmark for over 90 days. Students will apply for this permit before departing for Denmark. Detailed instructions and assistance will be provided as part of the orientation for the program.
