Ohio University alumnus Eric Francis shaping futures in the Ohio Valley

Eric Francis is taking what he learned at Ohio University and is using it to ignite aspirations and nurture passions of the next generation of students.

As a school counselor at the Belmont Career Center in St. Clairsville, Ohio, Francis encourages students to seize the opportunities afforded to them with the same fervor that once propelled his own educational pursuits.

"Being able to guide and direct in the lives of our youth is very fulfilling," Francis said. “Obtaining my master’s degree through Ohio University has opened many doors and has helped me provide for my family.”

Francis' decision to attend Ohio University to earn a Master of Education in School Counseling and Clinical Mental Health Counseling was driven by the institution's reputation and rich tradition of academic excellence.

"I chose Ohio University because of the opportunity that was afforded to me. OHIO has a strong tradition of academic excellence and I wanted to attend a school that boasts with pride," he said. This decision set the stage for a journey filled with personal and professional growth.

While Francis primarily attended the Athens campus, one significant summer session at Ohio University Eastern stands out as a pivotal moment in his academic journey. In 2008, he enrolled in a summer class called Introduction to Teacher Education, taught by Kathie Chini.

"She was a great instructor and helped formulate the foundational knowledge that I have been able to apply to the classroom setting," said Francis. This class not only enriched his educational experience but also led to meeting his future wife, who was a fellow student.

Reflecting on his time at Ohio University, Francis emphasized the importance of fully engaging with every aspect of campus life.

"Be present for everything whether it be class, a game, or social event. Savor every moment because before long, those opportunities won't be available," he advises current students. This approach, he believes, enriches the college experience, and leaves lasting memories.

As a school counselor Francis encourages prospective college students to seize the opportunities available to them and make the most of their educational journey. For those considering Ohio University Eastern, he offers practical advice:

"Life's a garden, dig it. Make it work for you. OHIO Eastern is an affordable option for anyone wanting to stay close to home," Francis said.

Francis' story is a testament to the profound impact that a dedicated educational journey can have on one's life. Through Ohio University, he found not only academic and professional success but also personal fulfillment and lifelong connections.
