Research

Plant Systematics
My primary interests are angiosperm systematics (with emphasis on the phylogeny and taxonomy of Labiatae) and phylogenetic nomenclature, an alternative to traditional biological nomenclature that is designed to name the parts of the tree of life by explicit reference to phylogeny. Students in my lab have worked on taxonomic treatments of various angiosperm groups, phylogenetic analyses of intergeneric relationships in the Labiatae, and floristic studies of local natural areas.

Faculty Research Focus Area: Phylogenetic Systematics

Current and Recent Research Projects

Preparation of the International Code of Biological Nomenclature (PhyloCode), published by CRC Press in June 2020.

Preparation of Phylonyms, a compendium of phylogenetically defined clade names, published by CRC Press in June 2020.

Floristic inventories of Athens Conservancy preserves (ongoing).
