Gatherings
Gatherings, Spring 2024
In this publication, we are highlighting three special collections and the faces behind those distinct materials. Meet alumnus Thomas Schiff, celebrated photographer and his unique perspectives presented through the lens of his panoramic camera; Nancy Rue former associate dean of University Libraries and her sheet music collection, many from the Tin Pan Alley era; and alumnus Joel Forrester and his original jazz compositions, audio recordings and personal writings.
Gatherings Spotlight:
Frank Buhla Collection
The Frank Buhla Collection, highlighted in this publication, not only provides photos of coal mining and early industries in Southeast Ohio, but also provides a glimpse into the life of the collector. A unique individual, Buhla’s lifetime of experiences as a miner, boxer, bartender, magician and collector are firmly rooted in Athens County, Ohio.
Set aside a few minutes to enjoy reading this publication.
Gatherings, Spring 2023
We welcome you to spend a few minutes to read about what’s happening at University Libraries. So, sit back and enjoy.
In this publication, we highlight our ongoing work to further diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility — as well as share a photo and video essay, and then introduce you to some of our colleagues.
Gatherings Spotlight:
World War II Manuscript Collections
University Libraries invites you to explore the annual “Gatherings Spotlight, 2022,” which highlights significant World War II manuscript collections from the Libraries’ Mahn Center for Archives and Special Collections. We hope you enjoy reading about the personal stories behind each of these collections during a very tumultuous period in the history of the world.
Gatherings, Spring 2022
Welcome to the newest issue of Gatherings, where we are highlighting “Innovate + Collaborate", an initiative honoring collaborative projects between the Libraries’ staff and other OHIO faculty and staff to advance teaching, learning and research across the University. This publication also hosts the documentary video, “An Interview with Gladys Bailin.” In 2019, Gladys Bailin, director emerita and distinguished professor from the School of Dance, established the Alwin Nikolais/Murray Louis/Gladys Bailin Archive Fund to preserve and promote those dance collections for future generations. And, for those who have not experienced working and studying inside the Libraries during this past year, we are offering a visual glimpse of students at Alden Library in a photo essay.
Gatherings Spotlight:
The Lynn Johnson Collection 2021
In the 1970s, Lynn Johnson was the first woman staff photographer for The Pittsburgh Press before she started her lifelong passion as a freelance photojournalist.
Johnson gifted her archive of nearly two million images to Ohio University Libraries in 2011, where the collection continues to grow and mirror her active career and engagement with OHIO students. In 2017, Johnson’s distinctive work was recognized with a Medal of Merit awarded by the Ohio University Alumni Association.
