OHIO art students, faculty to host annual Winter Ceramics Sale

The Ohio University School of Art + Design and the College of Fine Arts will host the annual Winter Ceramics Sale from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Dec. 5-6 in Siegfried Hall’s fifth floor lobby. The sale is open to the public.

Graduate and undergraduate students in the ceramics program, as well as faculty artists will present work in the sale. The event held twice each year, once in the fall and once in the spring, is a great chance for the public to view and purchase unique handmade mugs, cups, bowls, jewelry and artwork.

The ceramics sale gives students the opportunity to see how their work does in a marketplace, while offering customers a chance to meet the artists and learn about the craft behind each piece.

All proceeds support the artists directly, and benefit the ceramics department’s funds for materials, class trips and special events, like visiting artist’s lectures and demonstrations. OHIO’s Clay Club will also have a fundraiser during the sale.

From hand building, wheel throwing, casting, and 3d printing, Ohio University’s ceramics department pushes contemporary work into an age old medium. The exploration of ideas and material potentiality is a focal point of Ohio University’s ceramic artists. The ceramics studio offers unique access to multiple atmospheric kilns allowing students to develop work through wood, soda, and salt firings. Students mix their own clay and glazes, allowing them to learn the chemistry behind specific recipes and alter to achieve desired results. Currently there are six undergraduate students in the major, nine graduate students, and four ceramics professors.
