STATEMENT REGARDING ARREST OF TRES GENCO

As has been widely reported in the media, on July 21, 2021 the FBI arrested an Ohio resident, Tres Genco, on federal charges stemming from an alleged plan to conduct a mass shooting at a university in Ohio. The Ohio University Police Department (OUPD) is also aware of posts on Genco’s social media sites asserting that he is a student at Ohio University; however, Genco is not now, nor ever has been, enrolled at OHIO.

OUPD conferred with the FBI prior to Genco’s arrest and despite his social media posts, there was no indication that Genco planned to target Ohio University. Based on what is known at this time, we do not believe there is any additional risk to our campuses as a result of this case. OUPD will continue to monitor this case as it develops and take appropriate action within our community if our threat assessment changes.

OUPD continues to provide active aggressor response training to our community and encourages those who haven’t attended a session to consider doing so. A short video summarizing the training is available at https://youtu.be/NH1lUF8wk3M.

Questions regarding the criminal investigation should be directed to the U.S. Attorney's office in Columbus.
