Double the achievement: Betts sisters shine bright as outstanding students at OHIO Eastern
Alyssa and Sierra Betts of Bethesda, Ohio, recently made headlines for their outstanding academic achievements. Both sisters graduated from Ohio University Eastern with honors and received outstanding student awards. Their journey through college was marked by dedication, passion and a deep commitment to their fields and community.
Alyssa Betts earned a Bachelor of Middle Childhood Education degree with focuses on language arts and mathematics.
"Alyssa excels both academically and, in her field, but above all, she demonstrates exceptional character; she is a fantastic human being," said Jacqueline Yahn, associate professor of middle childhood education. "As a junior rural teacher fellow, she has seized numerous opportunities to lead. Collaborating with Mrs. Dudzik at Barnesville Middle School, she has played a pivotal role in developing the agricultural program, speaking at conferences, and serving as its spokesperson.”
Alyssa found her calling to be an educator during field placements.
"From my very first field placement with Columbus City Schools to my most recent placement at Barnesville Middle School, I knew that I loved teaching," she said.
Sierra Betts earned a Bachelor of Social Work degree with a minor in psychology.
Warren Galbreath, associate professor of social work, praised her leadership qualities and dedication to community service.
"Sierra maintains a GPA of 3.88 and exhibits leadership qualities in both academic and community spheres. Her active involvement in the campus Social Work club underscores her dedication to pursuing a career in social work. Furthermore, her leadership roles in local 4-H clubs exemplify her commitment to both community service and academic excellence,” Galbreath said.
Both Alyssa and Sierra expressed gratitude for the support they received from Ohio University Eastern faculty.
"Dr. Yahn was easily the most influential professor that I had," Alyssa acknowledges. "She was a wealth of knowledge about all things education."
Sierra echoes this sentiment, thanking her professors for their guidance and encouragement.
"My favorite professor was Dr. Greenlee because he always made a positive difference in my life," she said.
As these two remarkable sisters embark on the next chapter of their lives, their impact resonates far beyond the confines of their hometown, Alyssa hopes to make an impact on middle grade students, while Sierra plans to pursue a career as a licensed social worker within the school system. Their journey serves as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and the unwavering support of family and community. Alyssa and Sierra Betts stand as shining examples of academic excellence and compassionate leadership.
