Teaching & Learning Systems Portfolio

About

Products that provide instructional technology and resources directly supporting teaching and learning. Includes learning management systems, instructional technology support, assessment and learning analytics, lecture capture, learning spaces management, and polling and surveys.

Vision

The Teaching and Learning Technologies portfolio will enable the design, delivery, and assessment of curriculum with expertise, technology, and support consistently meeting student and faculty expectations.

Portfolio Priority

A Portfolio Priority is not the only work happening in this Portfolio, but it is the highest priority. If we do not make progress on this priority, the Portfolio will not be successful:

Portfolio Priority: Teaching and Learning Systems

Improve the student-accommodated testing experience by creating a strategic plan that addresses the location, staffing, and purpose of the Athens Testing Center in the context of other student support services, in collaboration with academic stakeholders.

Foster a data-centric approach to make fiscally responsible decisions in our software evaluations, renewals, and corresponding support staffing models while keeping the student experience in mind.

Roadmap

The Teaching & Learning Systems roadmap lays out where we currently are and where we expect to be in the coming months and years. This roadmap will be updated regularly to reflect changing industry standards and changing needs within the University, but the overall trajectory should be predictable from semester to semester.

Current Initiatives

Jan 2025 - Jun 2027
Evaluate Our Software Suite

This will allow us to align our technologies to the needs outlined by the Dynamic Strategy’s Learn pillar (opens in a new window), combined with the industry’s changing offerings. Meanwhile, it allows us to establish a technology ecosystem that meets teaching and learning needs, as well as promotes fiscal responsibility.

Jan 2025 - Jun 2026
Continue the Learning Management System Rollout

Starting Summer 2025, we will begin archiving Blackboard content in preparation of the system’s June 2026 retirement. We will also continue to roll out new Canvas features to improve the student and faculty experience.

Optimize Learning Space Technology Design and Support

Based on student and faculty feedback collected through the Classroom Assistance Ticketing System (C.A.T.S.) rollout, we will proactively analyze learning spaces and establish improvement opportunities for a more consistent and user-friendly student experience.

Notable Accomplishments

  • Canvas LMS is live with 89% of polled students excited about it!

83% of courses in the fall 2024 and the spring 2025 semesters leveraged Canvas, and even though we saw 3.5 times our usual ticket volume for LMS-related questions this fall, Canvas handled 75% of these questions through its 24/7 support.

  • Launched C.A.T.S.

The Classroom Assistance Ticket System (C.A.T.S.) launched in the fall of 2024 in centrally scheduled Athens-based classrooms allowing faculty to leverage a single reporting structure to share concerns with classrooms. In its inaugural semester, we received 549 tickets through this system with the top issues being projector and audio-related help needs. This system and corresponding business process allowed us to cut our initial response time in half.

  • Supported Student Cost Savings through Digital Course Materials

The Digital Course Content program (Inclusive Access) continues to impact more students, with the highest number of course sections (842) to date enrolled last fall. Since summer of 2018, the program has saved $10.2 million in textbook costs to OHIO students.

By The Numbers

93%
of courses taught in an OHIO-supported LMS are taught in Canvas (10% increase from Fall 2024)
42
of 200 centrally-scheduled Athens classrooms received a technology refresh during AY24/25
150
minutes faster resolution time for classroom tickets (compared to one year ago); a 60-minute improvement from Fall 2024
