The Grey Green Alliance
The transformative trends of aging and warming carry dramatic economic, health and social implications for communities large and small. Yet researchers and practitioners associated with each field rarely collaborate within the United States and internationally.
The Grey Green Alliance is an applied research and practice collaboration between aging and climate faculty, professional staff, and students at Ohio University’s Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service and Ohio State University’s College of Social Work and Age-Friendly Innovation Center.
These efforts include working directly with age-friendly communities in our regions and state, including Age-Friendly Athens County, Age-Friendly Columbus and Franklin County, and the 34 community members of the Coalition of Age-Friendly Communities of Ohio (CAFCO).
In addition to preparing for aging and warming in Ohio, the Grey Green Alliance engages key actors like AARP, the World Health Organisation, and a range of scholars and practitioners across the United States and abroad. The Grey Green Alliance works to expand research and practice networks that enable scholars and practitioners to collaborate and innovate across scales and geographies.
Efforts to date have focused on bringing diverse stakeholders together in dialogue to break down siloes between aging and climate topic areas, identifying emerging threats posed by new trends in heat, floods, fires, and air quality, pursue synergistic responses to immediate extreme weather events as well as longer-term shared goals in accessible and affordable transport, housing, infrastructure, health, outdoor spaces and social connection.
These opportunities for integrated analysis and practical program innovation are at the heart of Grey Green Alliance activities that range from peer-reviewed publishing to advising policymakers and partnering with local community organizations.
