The goals of OhioU-view are to promote the use of satellite and geospatial data in education; facilitate the use of satellite data to monitor areas of critical environmental concern; facilitate cooperation between education, and state and local governments in remote sensing and digital mapping; facilitate research and development in the applications of satellite data, and establish "virtual" centers for satellite and geospatial data synthesis and dissemination.
On this page you will find links to useful educational resources and research products developed here at Ohio University through the OhioView project.
These products are free for your use, and we encourage you to integrate them in your educational work. Some files are large and will require time to complete the download.

Primary Source of Landsat Data
Online Global Satellite Imagery
Good Places to Start (Free Satellite Data)
The Global Land Cover Facility (University of Maryland): Georeferenced. Provides access to IKONOS, Landsat TM/ETM, MODIS, AVHRR, and SRTM (Shuttle Radar Topographic Mission) image data (coverage: International)
USGS EROS Seamless Data Distribution System: View and download data for Othoimages (BLM Otho, LANDSAT7, LANDSAT MOSAIC). Click on "International."
USGS International Program: Collection of data dissemination servers that provide access to satellite images and data, aerial photographs, and maps such as EarthExplore, Earthshops, Global Land 1-KM AVHRR Project, and UNEP/GRID, etc.
Geography Network (ESRI): Provides access to a large collection of geospatial data from many of the world's leading data publishers.
Center for Global and Regional Environmental Research, Geodata Information Source (University of Iowa): Provides extensive links to data sites by topics such as Remotely Sensed Data and Satellite Imagery.
CIESIN (Center for International Earth Science Information Network): Provides downloadable data by subject including remote sensing. Especially good source for Urban Landsat and Urban Remote Sensing images.
GIS Data Depot: Provides extensive downloadable GIS data by country. Coverage: International. Some are free and some are fee-based.
Earth Observing System Data Gateway (NASA): Best place to get data for LANDSAT7-ETM+ and other environmental data by topics such as air quality, clouds, vegetation, and snow, etc. You can view the data through GLOVIS (http://glovis.usgs.gov), which is an image viewer developed by USGS.
Earth Observation Group (National Geophysical Data Center): Provides Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Data.
NASA's Global Hydrology and Climate Center: Provides interactive Global Geostationary Weather Satellite images.
ASTER (Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection Radiometer): Offers detailed maps of land surface temperature, reflectance and elevation. Link to Japan's Earth Remote Sensing Data Analysis Center (ERSDAC).
SPOT Vegetation: Offers high quality of remote sensing image of vegetation cycle for the entire Earth ever day every day.
AFRICOVER: A digital georeferenced database on land-cover, and a geographic referential (geodesy, topography, roads, hydrography) at a 1:250,000 / 1:200,000 scale for the whole Africa and online Africa Atlas. Developed jointly by NASA, the Dept of Geography of the University of Maryland, and the Dept of Environmental Sciences of the University of Virginia.
GEO-3 Data Portal (UNEP): Extensive, global environmental and human data (Freshwater, Population, Forest, Emissions, Climate, Disasters, and Health).
Digital Chart of the World by ESRI (via Penn State University) National boundaries and layers of different countries (Arc/Info export format) at 1:1 million scale. Coverage: International.
Global Change Master Directory (NASA): A directory of Earth Science Data and Service. Some data online; other data to order. Extensive links to earth science data sites. Coverage: International.
Satellite Image Browser (jpg or gif images) USGS Global Visualization Viewer (GloVis): An image viewer developed by USGS to display all available images form USGS Landsat data collection as well as ASTER, MODIS< and EO-1. and to display selected satellite images.
NASA World Wind: An open source software developed by NASA to display LANDSAT7, SRTM, MODIS, NASASVS, and etc.
