The Certificate in Technology Enhanced Language Teaching provides a solid foundation in the use of technology for language teaching for those who work or intend to work as teachers, administrators, or developers. Admission Requirements

Application Deadlines

  • The summer deadline is April 1.
  • The fall deadline is July 15.

Bachelor’s Degree

GPA (or equivalent) of 2.5 or better in most recent degree program.

Transcripts

Resume, which must include a list of every school attended, as well as the GPA obtained at each institution.

Brief Statement of Purpose (one to two pages) by the candidate.

English Proficiency. International students whose native language is not English also must submit scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or the International English Language Testing System (IELTS academic). To be considered official, test scores must be reported directly from the testing agency to Ohio University. For non-native English speakers: Minimum TOEFL: 600 (paper), 100 (iBT), or IELTS: 7.0 overall average.

International Students: This program may not permit full-time enrollment in residence at Ohio University, and an I-20 cannot be issued based on admission to this program.

Completion Requirements

Complete a minimum of 14 credit hours and practicum experiences as follows.

Required Courses

  • LING 5800 Methods & Materials in TEFL (4 credits): This course emphasizes both language teaching theory/methodology and creation of instructional, analytical, and evaluative materials. 
  • LING 5510 Technology Enhanced Language Teaching I (4 credits): Are you ready to explore the amazing world of computers and technologies in language teaching? TELT I is designed to train future language teachers to integrate technology into their language teaching to foster engaged classroom environments and to help them be equipped with essential technological tools. This course explores key terms and concepts related to computer-assisted language learning, a range of technology-assisted language learning tools, and practical considerations of how to use technology for teaching regarding various language skills.
  • LING 5520 Technology Enhanced Language Teaching II (4 credits): TELT II is a project-based course that emphasizes instructional design approaches to the development of online and hybrid courses that focus on student engagement, creativity, digital citizenship and digital age learning experiences. Students are guided through the process of conducting needs analyses, defining course goals and objectives, and designing activities and course materials. The course will also discuss various models of online delivery, content organization and presentation, and digital ethics issues.
  • LING 5921 CALL Teaching Practicum (2 credits): This course provides students with supervised opportunities to develop teaching materials and to assist with online instruction for teacher training for international faculty. Students will apply practices related to language teaching methods, materials design, and computer assisted language learning. They will also be responsible for creating instructional materials and environments used in the practicum. Students will have opportunities to focus on a variety of teaching methods and English language skills, including writing for academic purposes, English as a medium of instruction (EMI), pronunciation, and other foci as appropriate.

Certificate Learning Outcomes

  • Students will be able to describe the most common design principles for TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) teaching materials.
  • Students will be able to elucidate and evaluate the methodological and technological options available to the teacher of English to speakers of other languages in a particular teaching context.
  • Students will be able to assess the relevance and potential of materials and technologies forparticular teaching contexts.
  • Students will be able to produce a set of materials that can be used in the TESOL classroom.
  • Students will be able to critically evaluate the principles upon which these materials are based, and the technologies chosen to help deliver them
