Language Placement Testing

Students who need to take the language placement test for summer or fall registration, or who need to take the OPI or WPT, should click on the appropriate link for instructions.

Who Should Take These Tests?

The language placement test in French, German, Italian or Spanish is for new students who have not previously taken a language course at Ohio University. The test is required for any student who wishes to take a French, German, Italian or Spanish course other than FR 1110, GER 1110, ITAL 1110, or SPAN 1110.

The Oral Proficiency Interview (OPI) is for Arts & Sciences majors in French, German and Spanish, and for Patton College majors in Foreign Language Education, who need to take this test in order to complete their graduation requirements.

The Writing Proficiency Test (WPT) is for Patton College majors in Foreign Language Education, who need to take this test in order to complete their graduation requirements.

The Language Placement Test for French, German and Spanish is available through Proctortrack.

Students who need to take the Language Placement Test to register for classes should read the following information carefully.

Send an Email Request to Take the Language Placement Test

  • Your email must be sent from your OHIO email to cas.undergrad@ohio.edu.
  • Make the subject line on the email: Language Placement Test request.
  • State you would like to register for the Online Language Placement Test.
  • Include your PID.
  • State which language you would like to take.
  • Include how much experience in the language you have had (how many years in middle school, how many years in high school, how many years at another college, travel abroad including where and how long).

Policies for Taking the Language Placement Test

  • You can only take the placement test one time.
  • If you have completed a course, or are currently enrolled in a course, you cannot take the placement test.
  • If you wish to register for FR/GER/ITAL/SPAN 1110, you do not have to take the placement test. If you start in 1110, you cannot subsequently take the placement test in order to move up in the series.

Testing Requirements

  • The test must be taken on a laptop or desktop computer (tablets, Chromebooks, and phones will not work).
  • You must have a working webcam.
  • You must use either Firefox (preferred) or Chrome.
  • You must have your OHIO ID.
  • Allow sufficient time (at least two to four days) for the test to be taken and the results posted.

Oral Proficiency Test (OPI) and Writing Proficiency Test (WPT)

Below are instructions to register for the OPI or WPT provided by Language Testing International.

  • Go to the Language Testing International website.
  • Click on "buy a test."
  • Click on "get started."
  • Click "yes" if you are you testing for “State Teacher Certification.”
  • Select Ohio University-Dept. of Modern Lang.”
  • Select language.
  • Select test type.
  • Select "proctoring option."
  • Select "web based proctoring."
  • Select date and time.
  • Create account.
  • Process payment.
