Courses

The RN to BSN online curriculum builds on your previous nursing education. In order to complete their bachelor's degree in nursing, students are required to complete:

• total required hours
• general education course requirements
• specific BSN support courses
• upper-level BSN courses

Many courses you need to earn your BSN will have been completed during your associate degree or diploma in nursing education and may be transferable to Ohio University to apply to the hours required to earn a bachelor of science in nursing.

After you are admitted to the RN to BSN Program and your transcripts are received by Ohio University, the information will be reviewed, after which you will receive a communication directing you how to view your personal DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System), where you will be able to see exactly which requirements have been met and what courses you will need to take.

Total Credit Requirements

A total of 120 credits with a 2.0 grade point average is required for graduation. Many of these hours you may have already completed in your previous education, and can be transferred to Ohio University; some will be earned while taking nursing courses and support courses. After you are admitted to the program, a review of your records of previous coursework will result in a DARS (Degree Audit Reporting System) report illustrating what is needed to complete your BSN.

Thirty (30) credit hours of the 120 total must be completed with Ohio University, referred to as residency hours. Your nursing courses total 31 hours.

University-wide General Education Requirements

Students will be notified of individual course needs after full admission to the RN to BSN program and evaluation of transfer credits.

To meet Ohio University general education course requirements, you must choose the specific courses from an approved list in the Ohio University Undergraduate Catalog, but not all courses listed are available online. A limited number of courses that will allow you to meet general education requirements will be available online each semester.

If you need additional general education course credit, you may earn it in three ways:

• complete a course at Ohio University through traditional face-to-face delivery at one of our campuses,
• complete a course online from OHIO,
• or complete a course at another college and transfer the credit to Ohio University.

Credit for some support courses may be transferred from previous education. Many support courses are available online from Ohio University. Course length varies from five weeks up to 14 weeks in length, depending on the course.

Required Nursing Major Courses

All nursing courses (NRSE) will be completed online from Ohio University for 31 credit hours total. All nursing courses are offered in five-week sessions.
