Patton College of Education Assessment and Accreditation
The Office of Assessment & Academic Improvement serves as The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education's & Education Unit's coordination and collection point for data collection, analysis and reporting required by state and accrediting bodies (e.g., CAEP, ODHE, etc.).
The Unit for the Preparation of Education Professionals (UPEP) uses assessment data for continuous program and unit improvement.

To help address the nation's need for well-prepared educators, The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education seeks recognition from several accrediting bodies. Accreditation ensures The Patton College and its programs meet or exceed professional standards and assures quality in the education profession.
Programs in The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education are accredited by the following organizations:
CAEP
The Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) is a national organization whose standards must be met in order for teacher licensure programs to be accredited. The next College accreditation visit is set for fall 2028.
Since 1954, the Ohio University Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education has been accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE). This accreditation covers initial teacher preparation programs and advanced educator preparation programs. NCATE ceased to function in spring 2016 and has been merged to create the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP). Beginning with spring 2016, CAEP will be the sole accrediting body for educator preparation. CAEP is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation to accredit programs for the preparation of teachers and other professional school personnel.
Ohio Department of Higher Education
The Ohio Department of Higher Education (ODHE) is the statewide regulatory agency for all licensure school-related programs (i.e. teachers, principals, school counselors, school psychologists, etc.) in Ohio. All College licensure programs offered at Ohio University are under the aegis of the ODHE and must submit periodic reports for program approval to this agency.
All The Gladys W. and David H. Patton College of Education programs, including Counselor Education, are also accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools. As a result, graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure and national certifications in a shorter time following graduation.
AAFCS
The American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (AAFCS), has conferred accreditation on the B.A.H.C.S. and the B.S.H.C.S. Graduates from the B.S.H.C.S. program are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach in grade four through twelve in family and consumer sciences.
ACTFL
The American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL), has conferred accreditation on the B.S.Ed in French, German or Spanish. Candidates can choose from French, German or Spanish. Graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach in Kindergarten through grade twelve in the respective modern languages classroom.
AMLE
The National Association for Middle Level Education (AMLE), has conferred accreditation on the B.S.Ed. in Middle Childhood Education. Graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach in grade four through grade nine in upper elementary grades, middle school and junior high school. Two content area specializations must be chosen in this program. Candidates can choose from language arts, mathematics, science and social studies.
CAA
The Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) has conferred accreditation on the School Speech-Language Pathologist program leading to licensure. The curriculum meets the standards required for certification in the state of Ohio.
CACREP
The Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Programs (CACREP), a specialized accrediting body recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA), has conferred accreditation to the following program areas in Counselor Education at Ohio University: Clinical Mental Health (M.Ed.), Clinical Mental Health/Clinical Rehabilitation Counseling (M.Ed.), School Counseling (M.Ed.), and the Ph.D. program in Counselor Education and Supervision.
COPART
The Council on Accreditation of Parks, Recreation, Tourism and Related Professions (COPART), has conferred accreditation on the B.S.R.S. COPART accredits the Recreational Studies program.
ELCC
The Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC), has conferred accreditation on the M.Ed. in Educational Administration. Graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to be building principals in one of the following: PK-6, 4-9, or 5-12. The Superintendent program is also accredited by ELCC.
NASM
The National Association of Schools of Music (NASM), has conferred accreditation on the B. in Music. The Music program has two tracks: Choral Music and Instrumental Music. Graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach in Kindergarten through grade twelve in music.
NASPE
The National Association for Sport and Physical Education (NASPE), has conferred accreditation on the B.S.P.E. Graduates are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach in pre-kindergarten through grade twelve in physical education.
NCSS
The National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) has conferred accreditation on the B.S.Ed. degree. Graduates from the B.S.Ed. program are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach all social studies courses in grades seven through twelve.
NCTE
The National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) has conferred accreditation on the B.S.Ed. degree. Graduates from the B.S.Ed. program are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach English and language arts courses in grades seven through twelve.
NCTM
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has conferred accreditation on the B.S.Ed. degree. Graduates from the B.S.Ed. program are able to fulfill the requirements for state licensure to teach mathematics courses in grades seven through twelve.
