About
The Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment (ISEE) conducts basic and applied research in a multidisciplinary team approach in key areas of advanced energy and environmental technology, including:
- Advanced materials, including advanced carbon-based materials (building materials, construction materials, infrastructure materials, energy storage materials)
- Advanced materials processing
- Advanced manufacturing (3D printing, additive manufacturing, manufacturing for a circular economy)
- Wastewater treatment
- Alternative and renewable energy systems
- Electrochemical energy storage systems
- Electrochemical synthesis
ISEE’s primary objective is to improve how we use our limited natural resources to produce power in an environmentally responsible way and to improve the quality of the air we breathe.
The state of Ohio has recognized Ohio University’s state and national reputation for energy and pollution research, as well as its potential to create jobs in the field, by designating Ohio University as a Center of Excellence in Energy and the Environment for the state of Ohio.
Mission
Our mission is to educate future generations to tackle society’s greatest energy and environmental-related challenges using sustainable engineering concepts, to promote student research and scholarship in the energy and environment realms, and to disseminate knowledge related to sustainable energy and environment topics.
We endeavor to:
- Develop solutions to global energy and environmental issues using multi-disciplinary approaches
- Educate future engineers and scientists in sustainable technological solutions
- Disseminate our research to increase public understanding of sustainable engineering practices
- Be a resource to industry and government for sustainable technological solutions
- Contribute to the continued educational growth of the community (local, regional, national, and international).
Creativity and technology application are the essential characteristics of ISEE as our students, faculty and staff strive to provide innovative economical solutions encountered by industry and society.
History
The Institute for Sustainable Energy and the Environment (ISEE) was established in 2004. Originally focused on coal and air quality research stemming from the Russ College’s Ohio Coal Research Center and Center for Air Quality, ISEE has transformed into a dynamic, multi-disciplinary research institution supporting the needs of industry, federal and state government, and academic clients.
Under Dr. Trembly’s direction, ISEE has extended its leadership into new research areas including sustainable shale development, wastewater treatment, nutrient recovery, and composite materials, while continuing traditional research areas such as coal utilization. Research takes place in an on-campus, 14,000 square-foot research and development facility featuring both fundamental and applied experimental/modeling capabilities.
