Colleen is an HTC student majoring in History with minors in English and Law, Justice, and Culture. She also works as Head Editor of the Sphere Literary Magazine. Colleen's first study abroad opportunity was the Eternal Rome: Power and Piety OHIO-Credit program in Rome where she visited several historical and cultural sites. Less than two months later, she traveled to London to attend several seminars with professors at the University of London and University of Cambridge for 2 weeks.

What skills do you feel you've gained from going on a global program?

I have gained knowledge that the world is vast, beautiful, and different. Going to see these different places is not the same as merely seeing a photo or video. I gained a greater appreciation for the fact that people live different lives and face different problems. Personally, I had so many experiences that were not available to me in the United States, and I now have a desire to go see even more new places!

What is one of your favorite memories from your global program?

I have so many, but in May 2023 I visited Brighton during my London trip. I had no idea Brighton even existed, and it was so cold that day, but it was the most picturesque town in south England. There was a rock beach, a boardwalk fair, and several pubs and taverns in the city. We rode a carousel, got fresh oysters along the beach, and saw all sorts of people playing soccer, volleyball, and dining on the beach. It was a simple day, but it was so peaceful, that I smile every time I look at the photos I took.

What advice would you give a student interested in a global program?

Look into it more! I thought study abroad would not be possible for me with my school schedule and was shocked at how easy the Office of Global Opportunities made planning and organizing these trips as compared to the ones I took on myself. Even if you're hesitant about it, at least explore the option, because it might be more feasible than you initially thought.
