Ohio University named a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly University by the League of American Bicyclists

The League of American Bicyclists has recognized Ohio University with a Bronze Level Bicycle Friendly UniversitySM(BFUSM) award, joining more than 180 visionary colleges and universities from across the country.

With the announcement of 46 new and renewing BFUs today, OHIO joins a cutting-edge group of colleges and universities across the United States that are transforming their campuses and the communities around them. There are now 182 Bicycle Friendly Universities in 45 states and Washington, D.C.

“From renewing Platinums to brand new Bronzes, this latest class of Bicycle Friendly University awardees shows a wonderful commitment to safety, health, and sustainability through their efforts to support bicycling on campus,” said Amelia Neptune, Director of the League’s Bicycle Friendly America Program. “We applaud this round of BFUs for raising the standard and being innovative in making bicycling a safe, convenient and enjoyable option for students, staff and visitors alike.”

Ohio University encourages bicycling as an easy option for transportation and provides amenities such as McCracken Hall’s shower and changing room for commuters and covered bicycle parking at numerous residence halls. In 2017, the University introduced a number of new bicycling initiatives, including the Rebike Program, which offers salvaged bicycles for sale to the campus community, and the Bobcat Bike Valet parking service for Saturday afternoon football games at Peden Stadium.

“Both the Rebike Program and Bobcat Bike Valet have been successful,” said Sam Crowl, Sustainability Project Coordinator in OHIO’s Office of Sustainability. “Both programs provide new services to the community and have helped to develop the local bicycling culture. In addition, new construction and renovation projects on campus have installed dozens of new bicycle racks and made other improvements to our bicycling infrastructure.”

Moving forward, OHIO will have access to a variety of free tools and technical assistance from the League to become even more bicycle-friendly. When colleges and universities invest in bicycling, great things happen: greenhouse gas emissions are reduced, traffic and parking congestion is minimized, healthy commuting lifestyles are encouraged, community connectivity is enhanced and a vibrant and fun campus culture is nurtured.
