University honors Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with full week of events [PHOTOS]
The Ohio University MLK Jr. Celebration Planning Committee, which is sponsored by the Office for Diversity and Inclusion, hosted a week of activities between Jan. 15-19 to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
The week carried the theme, “MLK 50 Forward: Together We Win with Love for Humanity.”
The week’s activities began on Monday, which was Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day, with the annual MLK Jr. Silent March and Brunch sponsored by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity.
On Tuesday, United Campus Ministry hosted a Faith Acts event featuring several spoken word performances, group activities and panel discussions. On Wednesday, the Office for Diversity and Inclusion hosted a Multicultural Student Ambassadors led discussion about Dr. King’s “Letter from Birmingham Jail” and the annual Creative Arts as Activism – Social Justice-Themed Open Stage event at Casa Nueva in uptown Athens.
On Thursday, Diversity and Inclusion hosted a screening of the docufilm, "Cuban Roots/Bronx Stories," which highlights the historical journey of an Afro-Cuban family, from Jamaica, to Cuba, to the Bronx. The film was followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
The week ended on Friday with a Teach-In hosted by The Love & Hate Theme that addressed King’s vision in the age of President Donald Trump.
In addition to the events, the week also featured a poster contest and a school supply drive.
