Community Forum on Free Expression scheduled for March 21
The following message was sent to Ohio University students, faculty and staff on Friday, March 2, 2018.
Dear Ohio University Community,
The Presidential Policy Advisory Group has been working since mid-November to formulate a series of suggested components to be included in a new policy, or pair of policies, on free expression at Ohio University.
To that end, committee members have reviewed all public comments on the current interim policies (“Freedom of Expression” and “Use of Outdoor Space”), organized the public comments into themes, studied the free expression policies of other colleges and universities, read and discussed Free Speech on Campus by Erwin Chemerinsky and Howard Gillman (Yale University Press, 2017), and learned about the long, robust history of free speech and related activities at Ohio University.
Based on that work, the committee has drafted 28 suggestions to be considered for inclusion in a new University policy, or set of policies, on free speech.
Please join us at the Community Forum on Free Expression, on Wednesday March 21, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. in Baker University Center Ballroom A, where we will seek your help in improving our suggested considerations and hear your comments before formally voting on which considerations to move forward in our final report. Light refreshments will be served.
The Community Forum will be livestreamed for those who cannot attend in person. More details will be provided closer to the event.
Thank you,
Scott Titsworth, Ph.D.
Dean, Scripps College of Communication
Convener, Presidential Policy Advisory Group
