iCUE Spotlight: March 5-11, 2018
Hey there Bobcats! It's Week 8 and there are tons of activities to participate in and deadlines to be aware of before you head off for Spring Break. There's something for every interest - from the Women's Basketball team hosting the MAC Tournament first round game on Monday to an encore screening of "Jane" with an presentation by Dr. Nancy Stevens on Thursday. But we can't list everything here so be sure to check the official Calendar of University Events for a full list. Read on for more:
2018 South & Southeast Asian Languages Awareness Week (Mar. 5 - Mar. 9): This event is co-sponsored by the World Languages Program, Center for International Studies, Asian Studies Program, MASA, PERMIAS, TSA, and SEASA. Learn about these languages through a variety of events throughout the week, including:
- Indian Arts Workshop (Monday, March 5, 4-6 p.m., RTEC 315): All are welcome to attend the Indian Arts Workshop by Hindi FLTA and Namrata Jain. Pens and fabric will be provided!
- Malaysian Food Exhibit (Tuesday, March 6, 4-6 p.m., RTEC 315): Don't miss a full display of Malay traditional food and a Teh Tarih demonstration by Shahrul bin Abdul Aziz and students from the Malaysian Student Association (MASA).
- Thai Novels Exhibit & Presentations (Thursday, March 8, 5-7 p.m., Tupper Hall 202): All are invited to attend this event hosted by Thai languages students and participate in a Thai costume photo booth with students from the Thai Student Association (TSA).
The Patton College Art Auction (Monday, March 5, 6-7:30 p.m., McCracken Hall Atrium): This very special annual fundraiser returns! This year, artwork from talented students at Vinton County South Elementary will be auctioned off to the highest bidders and proceeds will go to the student artist and the school's art program. It is open to the public, so everyone can come and support the arts in our local schools.
Focus on Research: Posters & Slides (Tuesday, March 6, 10 a.m., Alden Library 251): Creating a poster or designing slides for the 2018 Student Research & Creative Activity Expo and not sure where to start? Take advantage of this FREE workshop to learn simple strategies to build more effective posters and slides including updating a slide/deck with custom colors and fonts, finding high quality photos that you can use legally, and ensuring that your slides are prepared for printing or presenting on whatever kind of device you encounter.
Science Café: Hans Kruse, Can You Hear Me Now...Or Later (Wednesday, March 7, 5-6 p.m., Front Room Campus Coffeehouse): Join Hans Kruse, professor and director of information and telecommunication systems for his Science Café. Kruse will draw on his decade of work with NASA Jet Propulsion Lab (JPL) on their next-generation communication software to convey the challenges, solutions and limitations facing humanity as we send expeditions to even the nearest planets. Get there early - the first 50 people get free coffee!
