The theme for Homecoming 2018, scheduled for Oct. 15-20, is “Athens State of Mind.” The idea, proposed by alumna Sharon Miller, BA ’14, is reminiscent of how Bobcats carry the spirit of Athens with them no matter where they go.

Alumnus Tim Martin’s design was selected by the Homecoming Committee.

Martin, BFA ’10, relied on his graphic design background to put together the winning concept, but his inspiration dates back much further. An Athens native, Martin says he truly understands the essence of the town and its special meaning for both students and Athenians.

“It’s nice to see a theme that has an Athens focus tied together with the University,” Martin said. “It combines the two worlds. Everyone associates Athens with the University, but it’s important to show the town, too.”

Martin’s design honors the theme by using iconic images in Athens and at the University, like the Convocation Center, the Alumni Gateway, and the hills that dot the landscape.

“We felt this logo best represented the simple idea that Athens is not just a place, but a feeling that carries with you after you leave,” said Andrew Holzaepfel, senior associate director of student activities for the Campus Involvement Center. “The logo does an excellent job of showcasing parts of both the town and the University that are memorable.”

Martin is the owner of Red Tail Design Co., a graphic and web design company, and Ohio is Home, an apparel boutique. Both businesses are located in Athens.

“When it comes to Athens, inspiration comes easy to me,” said Martin. “Since it’s where I grew up and continue to build my life, it means many different things to me, and I can speak to that through my designs.”

The OHIO Alumni Association and Division of Student Affairs invited students and alumni to submit original designs by the end of February for the fifth annual logo competition. The committee selected Martin’s design among 13 creations, earning him the $100 prize.

“Athens means something special to each person who lives here or graduates from the University,” said Dawn Werry, senior director of external relations for Ohio University’s Alumni Association. “We are thrilled to celebrate this idea for a whole week in October. We hope alumni near and far can channel that Athens State of Mind for more than just Homecoming 2018, but for the rest of their lives.”
