OHIO expands gender neutral housing options

Housing and Residence Life has expanded its gender neutral housing room selection option for the 2018-19 academic year. Beginning in Fall 2018, gender neutral housing will be available to students in six residence halls across Ohio University's Athens Campus.

Currently, Smith House on South Green is the only residence hall at OHIO offering a gender neutral living experience. As one of 11 specialized living experiences, the program focuses on creating an inclusive environment where students can live in the same room with any student, regardless of sex, gender, gender identity/expression or sexual orientation.

Beginning next fall, gender neutral housing will also be offered on the first floor of Boyd Hall, a suite in Bromley Hall and a suite in Sowle Hall, as well as several rooms on the third floor of Pickering Hall and Bryan Hall. The expanded offerings are based on input from Student Senate, among other student groups.

First-and second-year residents interested in the expanded gender neutral housing options will be able to match with any student of any gender in any of the defined gender neutral housing locations. Returning students who are interested in this option should request gender neutral housing on their Personal Information page on their Housing Self-Service by March 8. First-year or transfer students who are interested in this option should request gender neutral housing at the same location by May 2.
