Southern Campus students share classroom experiences with Scottish peers

IRONTON, Ohio – Fall semester, Ohio University Southern students had an opportunity to learn alongside their counterparts in Scotland. Steve Call, along with his Introduction to Coaching, Coaching Education 2120 students teamed up with Dr. Daryl Cowan and his class at the University of the West of Scotland for lecture exchanges and group discussions. 

Each professor alternated teaching various coaching concepts including enhancing motivation through coaching practices and positive sport parenting. Following lectures, both classes discussed course material. Call felt the experience was useful for course participants. He said, “We were pleased. The feedback was positive from students on both campuses.”

This exchange was part of Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL). COIL is a cost-effective teaching program using technology to enhance cross-cultural learning. Steve Call is an instructor of Recreation and Sports Sciences at Ohio University Southern and a COIL Fellow.

Originating at The State University of New York (SUNY), Ohio University ‘s COIL initiative is a Regional Higher Education program that emphasizes both experimental and joint student learning. The cross-cultural experience is especially important for regional campus students who may not be exposed to the same level of cultural diversity as students on the Athens campus. 

Call says, “This program offers a great opportunity for all parties involved – students, staff and University partners.”

Call plans to continue his worldwide collaborations through COIL in future semesters. There are hopes that next Spring, his Coaching Education 3313 class, Coaching of American Football, will work with the Universidad Católica San Antonio de Murcia (UCAM) in Spain on a jointly offered class.
