Local youth compete in 19th Annual EMPIxx Awards at Southern Campus

IRONTON, Ohio – On April 13, Ohio University Southern hosted nearly 200 high school students from 10 area high schools for the annual EMPixx Awards. In its 19th year, the experienced-based programming and awards event gives participants a chance to hear from industry professionals in Electronic Media about key topics during a variety of workshops. Students submitted work in 11 categories ranging from audio and video production to multimedia print.

 

Chillicothe High School (CHS) Video Broadcasting Teacher Vanessa George feels that EMPixx is a unique and positive experience for her students. “[They] look forward to the workshop sessions because they are able to learn tricks of the trade from working professionals as well as get advice on the college programs available that could help them fulfill their career aspirations,” George said. 

 

George said that CHS students partner with Pickaway-Ross Career and Technology Center to produce entries for EMPixx. “The students absolutely love the awards portion as well because it allows them to compete with and generate future ideas from students from across the state,” she added. 

 

Associate Professor and Director of the Ohio University Southern Electronic Media Program Don Moore said, “We were excited about this year’s awards, total submissions were up from last year and quality of the projects seemed higher than the past.”  

 

Moore added, “As in the past, former students and local media professionals stepped up to volunteer as workshop presenters. All areas of media were represented, and I really appreciate those who came to give back.”

 

Southern Campus Production Assistant Ernie Hall feels that EMPixx is an excellent way to recognize and encourage creativity among high school students who show interest in electronic media. “It is wonderful to see the creativity and obvious hard work which has gone in to these projects and these students deserve a moment to be appreciated” Hall said. “I am already looking forward to next year’s awards.”
