Ohio University named national leader in recent ‘Best Green College’ ranking
Ohio University was ranked 16th in the top 25 Best Green Colleges in the United States according to College Consensus, a new college ratings website.
The website chose universities based on their reputation for sustainability and environmental consciousness using aggregated scores from publisher rankings and student reviews, assuring prospective students that the featured universities not only excel in academics and student life but also prioritize environmental sustainability.
“It is an honor for OHIO to be ranked in the top 25 Best Green Colleges,” said President M. Duane Nellis. “We seek to be national leaders in our sustainability efforts, and this award recognizes that commitment. From implementation of reusable to-go boxes at dining halls, to our faculty that are researching and actively making changes that impact the environment, we constantly seek new ways to help better our community, and we have made sustainability a top priority.”
OHIO’s Office of Sustainability plays a major role in facilitating the implementation of green efforts and providing services and support to the campus community, ensuring fulfillment of institutional commitments to environmental, social and economic well-being.
For instance, OHIO produces the largest in-vessel composting system at any college or university in the nation. Food waste generated in the dining halls on campus is taken to the facility where it is processed into nutrient-rich soil and then used on campus grounds and sold to the public. There are also several compost bins located around campus for food to be dropped in, allowing others to participate in being waste free. This is just one of many ways OHIO is making an impact on the environment.
