Ohio University Southern observes Domestic Violence Awareness Month with several events

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month and Ohio University Southern has been the scene of several events designed to increase awareness of prevention of abuse by partners and family relations.

The campus displayed t-shirts in the Riffe Center Mains Rotunda and in the Collins Center as part of the Clothesline Project to draw attention to the many types of domestic abuse that can occur in a community.

The brightly colored T-shirts were displayed throughout campus buildings at Ohio Southern in early October 2018 as part of The Clothesline Project to raise awareness of domestic violence and promote its prevention. Each color signified a different aspect of domestic violence, including white for women who died because of violence; yellow for assaulted women; red, pink and orange for survivors of rape and sexual assault; blue and green for survivors of incest and sexual abuse; and purple or lavender representing women attached because of their sexual orientation.

Also, the Lawrence County Domestic Violence Task Force held its 10th Anniversary Awareness Program in the Bowman Auditorium of the Ironton campus on Oct. 16.

Task Force Director Elaine Payne encouraged the audience to work toward an environment of respect in an effort to reduce domestic violence.

Ohio Southern's Associate Director of Student Resource Commons Robert Pleasant and Education Instructor Linda Mann, also spoke at the event. The program included the lighting of purple luminaries in memory of loved ones who have passed due to domestic violence.
