Alumnus Phil Muck, BSCOM ’62, one of the Ohio University community’s most loyal members, passed away Wednesday, March 20, on Marco Island, Florida. He was 80 years old.

A trustee emeritus of The Ohio University Foundation, Muck is survived by his wife, Patricia, who joined him in staunch support of all things OHIO, especially the College of Business, where he served as a member of its Executive Advisory Board since 1992.

“The loss of Phil Muck will be felt across the entire University community,” OHIO President M. Duane Nellis said. “His deep passion for his alma mater was matched only by his unflinching commitment to doing all he could to help ensure its continued success. He will be greatly missed.”

Shortly after Muck graduated with an accounting degree in 1962, he held a staff accounting position with Arthur Young & Co., which later became Ernst & Young. He held leadership roles in several manufacturing corporations before joining Munroe, Inc. in 1975. There, he served as the heavy fabricator’s president and CEO until his retirement. Since, he served as general partner of PFM Associates, a real estate investment partnership.

Muck’s professional accomplishments were always mirrored by his gracious service to the communities, causes and organizations he held dear. In addition to his support of OHIO, Muck served on the board of directors of Family House, an organization dedicated to the support of organ transplant candidates and their families, and chaired the Multiple Sclerosis Society, among many other community involvements.

Muck’s support for OHIO touched numerous areas of the University – from Athletics and the Marching 110 to myriad initiatives within the College of Business. He also served on OHIO’s Third Century Campaign Committee and was a member of the College of Business’ Society of Alumni and Friends.

The Mucks also provided critical support to the College of Business’ newest learning space: The Phil and Pat Muck Business Annex. Opened in 2016, the building provides students a modern, flexible learning setting focused on collaboration, to match today’s corporate office environment.

“Ohio University has been a focal point for Phil in terms of his time, leadership and financial support,” said College of Business Dean Hugh Sherman. “Few alumni can match Phil’s lifetime of professional success, involvement in the community, commitment to the University and leadership to the College of Business. Since his graduation in 1962, he’s been a constant presence in the College and throughout campus. Although Phil will be greatly missed, I know that his impact and legacy will live on for generations to come.”

Muck’s fellow College of Business alumni shared their personal remembrances as the Executive Advisory Board (EAB) convened for its regular meeting just days after his passing.

“Phil led with heart,” said EAB Chair Steve Krebs, BSISE ’92. “He wasn’t afraid to oppose a view that he didn’t agree with and wouldn’t shy away from difficult conversations. But at the end of the day, he was able to set aside our debate and we’d go root for the Bobcats at Peden Stadium, despite our differing opinions. We’re better because of his bold, but kind leadership.”

Jerry Peppers, BBA ’68, who served on The Ohio University Foundation Board of Trustees with Muck, echoed the impact of this loss.

“OHIO was always first with him. The intensity of his loyalty was inspiring,” Peppers said. “He will obviously be missed.”
