Would you like to purchase an affordable used bicycle to enjoy the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway and to get around campus and the City of Athens? Please join us for the third annual Ohio University Rebike Program.
Ohio University’s Office of Sustainability will host the ReBike Program at 2:30 p.m. Thursday, April 18, outside the Walter Hall Rotunda as part of the Reuse & Repair Fair and Earth Day Celebrations. ReBike is a “first-come, first-served” sale of “as-is” bicycles salvaged on the Athens Campus.
Each year bicycles are abandoned on campus. Toward the end of Spring Semester, the Ohio University Police Department tags bicycle wheels with colored paper, and owners who do not want their bicycle removed simply need to remove the tag from their bike (it will also automatically tear away when the wheels turn). During a sweep of campus in June, OUPD removes all bikes that still have the colored tags attached.
After collecting the abandoned bicycles, OUPD holds the seized property. If no claims have been made within 90 days, the property is legally declared abandoned and turned over to OHIO Moving & Surplus. In the spring, Moving & Surplus collaborates with the Office of Sustainability to offer these salvaged bicycles for sale to our community.
First-come, first-served registration and an opportunity to browse available bicycles will begin at 2:30 p.m., and the actual sale will begin soon after. Once the sale starts, customers are assisted in the order they registered and only a few people are allowed to view the bikes at a time. After a selection is made, the customer and the bike are moved to the checkout table to complete the sale and then more customers are allowed to enter the bike corral.
All bicycles will be $40.00 (tax included). It is recommended to have the bikes professionally evaluated for safety prior to using. Payment must be made in the form of a personal check or money order made payable to "Ohio University" or cash. Credit cards will not be accepted. Only one bike per person may be purchased and all sales are final.
Staff from local bike shops and other volunteers will be available to offer consultation and repair advice.
