Ohio University statement on Sigma Pi Fraternity (Epsilon Chapter)

Ohio University has expelled the Sigma Pi fraternity for hazing and other violations of the Student Code of Conduct. In November 2018, Ohio University received notice of the passing of first-year student Collin Wiant at an off-campus residence, which we later learned was an unofficial annex of the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter). The University immediately launched an administrative investigation to determine if violations of the Student Code of Conduct occurred related to the student death or otherwise. We immediately issued a cease and desist order to the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter), which restricted all organizational activities through the entirety of the administrative investigation and hearing process. Through the administrative investigation, the University received reports of hazing activity by members of the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter).  As a result, the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter) was charged with eleven violations of the Student Code of Conduct. The University Hearing Board, comprised of students, faculty, and staff from across campus, held hearings with members of the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter) in accordance with Student Conduct process and recommended expulsion as a sanction for these violations. The specific charges, as well as the University Hearing Board’s rationale are documented in the attached letter. As a result of the hearing outcome and subsequent appeals process, the University has upheld the findings of the hearing board to expel the Sigma Pi fraternity (Epsilon Chapter). Dr. Jason Pina, Vice President for Student Affairs, notified the fraternity of the decision earlier today. This decision is effective immediately and is final.
