Spring Faculty Learning Community will focus on large enrollment courses

In spring 2020, the Large Enrollment Course Faculty Learning Community will help faculty redesign courses with high enrollment to promote student success and increase learning outcomes.

The program will consist of 10 to 12 faculty who will engage in the process of course redesign with instructional designers in the Office of Instructional Innovation (OII). Meaningful conversations will develop around topics such as student success in large enrollment courses, access and inclusion, and student support services.

“We invite all faculty to participate in this university-wide initiative to reimagine the large enrollment course experience,” said Kyle Rosenberger, instructional designer in the Office of Instructional Innovation and Heritage College of Osteopathic Medicine. “Student success in large enrollment courses is an important topic in higher education. We look forward to providing faculty with a program that not only looks at some of the more global problems that exist with student success in large enrollment courses, while also including ideas, strategies, and resources to help faculty reimagine their own large enrollment course.”

Three instructional designers from OII will facilitate the Faculty Learning Community (FLC): Larry Hess, Jody Monk, and Kyle Rosenberger. The program also will feature involvement of campus-wide partners.

“Our goal is to provide faculty with various strategies that can be implemented into their course(s) in order to help struggling students become more successful,” said Candi Morris, associate vice provost for instructional innovation. “For faculty who teach in large enrollment courses, this is an opportunity to share their knowledge of what is working well with one another, as well as discuss the challenges they face in teaching large groups.”

In order to be eligible to participate in the FLC, applicants must meet the following qualifications:

  • Ohio University faculty
  • At least 120 students in the undergraduate course you teach
  • Course must be face-to-face or hybrid

Applications are due January 31. For more information and to register, visit the Large Enrollment Course FLC web page.
