OHIO WiFi, remote library services available to help students, faculty and staff

Ohio University will continue to provide outdoor WiFi coverage and remote library services while in-person instruction remains suspended.

Ohio University Libraries’ facilities on the Athens and regional campuses will close to the public by 5 p.m. Friday, March 20 until further notice due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. Libraries staff will continue to offer information services and support the electronic delivery of critical content for teaching, learning, and research via chat, email, and telephone. Please see the Remote Library Services, Libraries FAQ, and relevant regional libraries pages for more information.

Alden Library’s second floor and regional campus libraries will remain open until Friday, March 20 to give local faculty and students the opportunity to access technology, WiFi and print collections as they transition to remote teaching and learning. Alden Library is only accessible via OHIO ID card-swipe access at the second floor (Park Place) entrance, which is also accessible to people with disabilities. Service points will be unstaffed but help is available via chat.

Alden Library is open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Thursday and 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday this week. Regional campus libraries are open during standard business hours through Friday. Remote information services will be available Saturday and Sunday, March 22 and 23, from noon to 7 p.m. and hours will expand to 10 p.m. beginning when classes resume on Monday, March 23.

“OHIO Libraries play a vital role as access points for technology and WiFi, given the challenges in Internet and technology access for many of our students and faculty,” Ohio University Libraries Dean Neil Romanosky said. “However, I believe closing the Libraries’ facilities is necessary to ensure the safety of both our staff and our users in library spaces.”

Ohio University’s outdoor WiFi network will remain open to provide Internet access to students, faculty and staff. This includes most of the Athens campus (click here to see a map) and limited outdoor coverage on the Lancaster and Chillicothe campuses. Full coverage is available in many Athens parking lots, with Peden Stadium Lot 132 and Grover/Walter Lot 134 having ample space and easy access. Coverage is also available in Parking Lots 2-4, 6, 36-40, 43, 51-54, 56-58, 78-79, 86-88, 90, 93, 115, 119-120 and 122. The remaining Athens campus lots have limited or no coverage. Students on all campuses will continue to have access to indoor WiFi while campuses and locations remain open.

Users will need to log in using their Eduroam credentials to access the network.
