OHIO aviation student Garrett Carbullido Negley named Gates Scholar

Ohio University student Garrett Carbullido Negley has been selected as a 2020 Gates Scholar, a prestigious scholarship for outstanding minority high school seniors who meet federal Pell Grant eligibility criteria.

The Gates Scholarship is a highly selective scholarship funded by a grant from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and administered by the Hispanic Scholarship Fund. Launched in 2018, the scholarship is awarded to 300 student leaders per year, with the intent of helping them realize their maximum potential through earning a bachelor’s degree.

“We are so pleased that Garrett will join our Bobcat family this fall through the assistance of the Gates Scholar program,” OHIO President M. Duane Nellis said. “Garret demonstrated impressive leadership skills and academic accomplishments during his high school experience, and we look forward to helping him accomplish his goals as he begins his studies at Ohio University this fall.”

Negley, a native of Omaha, Neb., is double majoring in Aviation Flight and Aviation Management through the Russ College of Engineering and Technology, as well as double minoring in Business Administration and Communication Studies.

“I’m very excited and relieved to have won this scholarship since it was the only one I applied for and the only other way I would've been able to pay for school would've been with loans,” Negley said. “I hope to use this opportunity to fund my flight times, as well as any equipment needed for my profession and major.”

Gates Scholars receive funding for the full cost of attendance that is not already covered by other financial aid and the expected family contribution, as determined by the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), or the methodology used by a Scholar’s college or university.

In addition to funding, The Gates Scholarship provides support services to Scholars by engaging with them in a variety of ways to ensure they have access to resources and services they may need throughout college and the transition into their careers.

To be awarded a Gates Scholarship, Negley endured a 10-month application process that included writing four essays, completing a detailed application and a virtual interview. He is a 2020 graduate of Millard South High School where he participated on the varsity wrestling team, math club, varsity track team, junior class board, senior class board, and DECA, formerly known as Distributive Education Clubs of America.
