Eight years after being the first in the nation, Ohio University’s top-ranked sport management programs granted reaccreditation from COSMA

The Board of Commissioners reviewed OHIO's four sports administration programs based on eight accreditation principles.

All four of Ohio University’s sports administration programs have been granted the reaffirmation of accreditation by the Commission on Sport Management Accreditation (COSMA), the accrediting body that works to promote and recognize excellence in sport management education in colleges and universities around the world.

“I’m extremely proud that we’ve received reaffirmation of accreditation from COSMA,” said Dean Hugh Sherman. “The education offered by our College of Business’s Department of Sports Administration are consistently recognized as some of the world’s best programs. Our faculty and students strive for excellence every day and specialized accreditation is another indication of their commitment.”

COSMA’s review was based on their eight accreditation principles that require an academic unit or sport management program to show that it displays excellence in undergraduate and graduate sport management education and continuous improvement through COSMA’s developmental approach. After review and accreditation, these programs receive recognition for a period of up to seven years. Ohio University’s accredited programs include Bachelor of Science in Sport Management, Master of Sports Administration, Master of Science in Athletic Administration, and Professional Master of Sports Administration.

Ohio University was the first national university to be granted accreditation by COSMA in 2012 and acknowledged for its continued success in understanding the business of sports and successfully integrating those concepts into coursework.

“I’d be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge the tireless work of Professor Christina Wright, who leads all of our accreditation efforts,” said Jim Strode, chair of the Department of Sports Administration.“Professor Wright’s expertise in assessment, coupled with her ability to assist our faculty in continuous improvement in the classroom is a major reason our program maintains high academic standards. We’re proud to achieve reaffirmation of accreditation with COSMA, because it validates our faculty’s commitment to excellence in all of our academic offerings.”
