OHIO faculty and staff invited to participate in Community Engaged Scholars Program

The Ohio University Center for Campus and Community Engagement (CCCE) invites faculty to join the 2021 Community Engaged Scholars program. Through this program OHIO faculty and staff will develop capacity for community engaged teaching and scholarly activity.

CCCE Faculty Fellow Dr. Mike Kopish will facilitate the program. Training will feature self-guided online modules with opportunities for synchronous participation and will end with a capstone seminar. Participants receive $500 upon completion of the program.

“In community-based approaches, faculty get to go out and do some meaningful work and give students an opportunity to understand and learn some of the civic ethos that we want,” said Kopish. “It’s really focused on developing high quality citizens, which is a key goal of our institution.”

Participants in the program will:

  • Learn how community engaged service-learning can be incorporated into course curriculum.
  • Engage with community partners and experienced faculty to learn best practices for community engagement locally and globally.
  • Begin development of curricular activities and syllabi for C-Courses.

Dr. Greg Newton, associate dean for graduate studies, research and creative activity in the Scripps College of Communication participated in the program last spring.

“The best part of the program was the chance to workshop with colleagues—to get immediate and thoughtful feedback from various perspectives on my ideas, to find my blind spots, and to gain inspiration from seeing what others were working on,” Newton said. “I also found it helpful to just have an incentive to carve out the space to think through the design process in a more holistic and structured way than I had previously.”

C-Courses are collaborative partnerships between instructors and community organizations that engage students in at least 20 hours of service-learning. C-Courses qualify for the OHIO Honors Program, BRICKS General Education Learning and Doing Credit, and align with Guarantee+.

Interested faculty and staff can submit an interest form to indicate preferred program dates or contact Faculty Fellow Dr. Mike Kopish at kopish@ohio.edu for more information.
