Student account security improvements coming this summer
Students may need to modify how they access their email and other Office 365 applications such as Microsoft Teams over the summer to align with new security requirements.
Beginning on May 25, the Office of Information Technology will migrate all existing student email accounts to modern authentication and require multi-factor authentication to access applications such as Catmail and Teams. These changes will protect student privacy and make it much more difficult for unauthorized users to access University accounts.
How students can prepare
All students will need to confirm their identity by using the Duo Mobile app, text, or phone call when logging into Catmail, Teams or other Office 365 applications. This process is already in place to access MyOHIO Student Center. Students not already using Duo Mobile can enroll in multi-factor authentication at any time.
Students using older versions of email applications may need to upgrade to a newer version that supports modern authentication. The modern authentication migration page lists requirements by device and can help you determine if an upgrade is necessary. Students will be able to access their email via catmail.ohio.edu throughout the migration process.
Support from faculty and staff
Students enrolled in online classes taught via Microsoft Teams should be prepared to use multi-factor authentication starting on May 25. Students using the desktop applications for Teams and other Office 365 software should experience minimal impact after their first log-in.
