Gait Lab searching for research participants

CHSP student Rebecca Marszalek, a licensed, certified athletic trainer in OHIO's Post-Professional Masters in Athletic Training Program, and the Gait Lab is currently researching the effects of intrinsic foot muscle strengthening on arch height, foot posture, strength, and biomechanics in individuals with low arches.

The outcomes of this study may provide clinicians working in the rehabilitation setting with evidence in support of the prescription of these exercises for the prevention and treatment of various problems relating to flat feet.

Because low arch height can be a predisposing factor for various lower extremity overuse injuries, targeting the small muscles on the bottom of the foot that support the arch can be beneficial in reducing injury and improving overall foot function; understanding the effects of intrinsic foot muscle strengthening on foot morphology and foot biomechanics will ideally facilitate new therapeutic exercise approaches.

The study is searching for healthy adult participants between the ages of 18 and 35 who think they have or have been told they have low arches or flat feet and are interested in improving foot strength and overall foot function. If you are interested in participating, please contact Rebecca Marszalek at rm234419@ohio.edu.

Additional Criteria:

  • Healthy adults ages 18-35
  • Suspected of having low arches or flat feet
  • No history of lower extremity injury in the past 6 months
  • No history of lower extremity surgery
  • No history of neurological disorder that affects musculoskeletal function

Please note: You will be asked to undergo a brief screening procedure that includes examining your feet to make sure you qualify.

This research is being conducted through Ohio University. IRB # 21-X-67.
