Ohio University mourns the passing of alumnus and Foundation Trustee Emeritus Thomas Weihe

The Ohio University community is saddened by the passing of Thomas Weihe, BSED ’61, a dedicated alumnus who leaves a more-than-50-year legacy of philanthropy and service that has improved the OHIO experience for generations of students and countless more to come.

After graduating with his degree in education, Weihe taught high-school biology before returning to his home in Norfolk, Nebraska, to run the family business, Norfolk Rendering Works. He expanded that business and broadened his impact on the industry as president of the National Renderers Association.

Always prepared to continue teaching, he enjoyed mentoring other entrepreneurs, participating in the development of numerous ventures over the years, and serving on a variety of boards. At OHIO, Weihe served as an emeriti trustee of The Ohio University Foundation, having completed his nine-year term in 2021.

“Tom Weihe was a passionate public servant, as demonstrated by his steadfast commitment to his beloved alma mater and the students we serve,” Ohio University President Hugh Sherman said. “On behalf of Ohio University, I send my deepest condolences and greatest appreciation to Tom’s family and friends. His legacy is a valued part of our history.”

Together with his wife and fellow Bobcat, Gwen, BSHEC ’61, the Weihes’ generosity has touched numerous areas of OHIO, including scholarships, student support, the Tantrum Theatre, and especially OHIO Athletics, which saw critical support from the Weihes for the enhancement of several areas supporting student-athlete athletic and academic success.

“Tom Weihe’s decades-long commitment to OHIO Athletics has had a significant and lasting impact on our sports programs, the Bobcat community, and most importantly, on the experiences of our remarkable student athletes, who will continue to manifest the Weihes’ legacy of generosity for years to come,” OHIO Athletic Director Julie Cromer said.

As an Ohio University Foundation Trustee, Weihe served on The Promise Lives Campaign Committee, forging close bonds and meaningful collaborations with fellow board members.

“Tom shared his Bobcat heart and soul with Ohio University. His warm smile, steadfast support, and encouraging words have been inspirations to all involved with the Foundation,” said Nico Karagosian, OHIO vice president for Advancement and CEO of The Ohio University Foundation. “He set a remarkable example of what commitment to and affection for OHIO look like — rolling up your sleeves and putting in the time, talent, and treasure required to keep our alma mater strong and to ensure its future. I’d be remiss if I didn’t also acknowledge Tom’s beloved wife, whom he often referred to as ‘Mrs. Weihe,’ for her service and for sharing her husband with us. We are most grateful to Tom not only for his years of service, but also for his years of friendship.”
