Ohio Today fall issue available to OHIO employees online and at campus distribution points

The fall 2021 issue of Ohio Today, Ohio University’s alumni magazine, has been released and is available to OHIO faculty and staff online at ohiotoday.org. A limited number of hard copies of the magazine are available for pick-up at the following distribution points on each OHIO campus:

  • Athens Campus – Copies are available at the fourth-floor guest services desk at Baker University Center and in the second-floor vestibule of Alden Library.  
  • Chillicothe Campus – Copies are available in the Dean’s Office. 
  • Cleveland Campus – Copies are available in the Cleveland HCOM lobby. 
  • Dublin Campus – Copies are available in the Dean’s Suite (Suite 350 of Medical Education Building 1). 
  • Eastern Campus – Copies are available in the Dean’s Office. 
  • Lancaster Campus – Copies are available in the Dean’s Office. 
  • Southern Campus – Copies are available in the Dean’s Office. 
  • Zanesville Campus – Copies are available outside the Dean’s Office, inside the suite of faculty offices and in the library.  

Some highlights of the fall issue of Ohio Today include:

Called back into service — Retired College of Business Dean Hugh Sherman takes the helm as OHIO’s 22nd President, bringing with him a 26-year legacy of service to Ohio University and five priorities for the next two years. 

OHIO Unified — As Ohio University celebrates the 75th anniversary of its first regional campuses, a new One OHIO strategic initiative is ushering in a modern-day approach to collaboration, curricular innovation and workforce development. Read about how OHIO is, for the first time in its history, operating as a unified university system. Take a look at the history of the University’s expanding presence in the Bobcat State and beyond. And hear from an alumna who found success—and earned three degrees while working full time—through a college experience that traversed OHIO’s regional campuses and online programs.

From sea to space — A 1972 alumnus is poised to make world history and become the first OHIO graduate to boldly go where no Bobcat has gone before.

OHIO in space — As you look to the sky, there, too, is Ohio University—seen in the myriad space research and exploration contributions of alumni, faculty and students. Explore an infographic celebrating just a few out-of-this-world Bobcats and OHIO’s legacy beyond Earth.

In their element —OHIO students and faculty are building chemistry in a new Chemistry Building. Read about this new center for groundbreaking learning and research and take a 360-degree look at the building’s labs and instrumentation. 

Stage set — Ohio University’s new BIPOC student-led campus theater takes root—and prepares for its first production.

Time Machine: 25 years of the Ping Center — Ohio University’s Charles J. Ping Student Recreation Center debuted in January 1996, fulfilling the vision of an OHIO president and the student body and marking a new beginning for student recreation and wellness.

In word and deed — Alumni volunteers lend their voices and a personal touch to help recruit the students following in their footsteps.

Laying a new foundation for an OHIO education — After 40-plus years, Ohio University’s general education system shifts from “tiers” to “bricks.”

In this moment — The drive toward a more diverse and inclusive Bobcat community now has a University-wide roadmap.

Practical civility — For 10-plus years, OHIO’s George Washington Forum has provided students a space for civic education, civil debate and a diversity of viewpoints. A more than $1.6 million gift from the Menard Family has brought the Forum a new name, a new professorship and an expanded focus and programming. 

Last word — In a Q&A, Dr. Mario Grijalva, an OHIO graduate and professor of microbiology, talks about a building a career, a research center and a coalition dedicated to preventing infectious disease—and his childhood dream of becoming a superhero scientist.
