Alumnus talks about tips for chemistry students seeking jobs in the pharmaceutical industry, March 28

Ohio University alumnus Dr. John M. Wetzel will discuss careers in the pharmaceutical industry and job searching strategies with students on March 28 from 4:10 to 5:05 p.m. in Walter 245.

Since 2005, Wetzel has been the principal at Wetzel Chemistry Consulting LLC, providing chemistry leadership for clients in both drug discovery and drug development. Wetzel Chemistry is based in the Athens, Ohio, area. He consults primarily for start-up pharmaceutical companies in drug development, and several projects on which he consulted received marketing approval from the FDA.

Wetzel received a College of Arts and Sciences Notable Alumni Award in 2019. He earned a B.S. in Chemistry from the OHIO College of Arts and Sciences in 1982. Wetzel studied synthetic organic chemistry and received a Ph.D. in Chemistry in 1988 from Johns Hopkins University. He also was a visiting scientist at the Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Chemistry, Osaka, Japan from 1988 to 1990.

Before forming Wetzel Chemistry Consulting in 2005, Wetzel held research positions at Lundbeck Research, Synaptic Pharmaceutical Corp., and the Suntory Institute for Bioorganic Research.

At Synaptic Pharmaceutical in Paramus, NJ, Wetzel held various positions from 1990 to 2003, culminating in director of chemistry. He continued there until 2005 after Synaptic became Lundbeck Research USA.

As an undergraduate student at OHIO, Wetzel performed undergraduate research with professors Jack Blazyk, William Huntsman and Jared Butcher. He once taught CHEM123 as a visiting professor and previously collaborated with the research group of Dr. Stephen Bergmeier, professor and chair of chemistry and biochemistry in the College of Arts and Sciences.
