Approximately 1,000 students joined the Ohio University Alumni family during the Fall 2022 Commencement.
The ceremony, which recognized both undergraduate and graduate students, was held on Saturday, Dec. 10, at the Convocation Center in Athens.
Ohio University Board of Trustees member Cary Cooper convened the commencement, welcoming all Bobcats and their families before introducing the Army ROTC and Air Force ROTC members for the presentation of colors.
“When you became a Bobcat, each of you brought your own backgrounds, cultures and experiences, and each of you added to our University community. Each of you helped to make Ohio University the special place that it is, and I want to thank you for being a Bobcat,” OHIO President Hugh Sherman said to the graduates during welcoming remarks.
President Sherman also introduced Dr. Nukhet Sandal, associate dean in the College of Arts and Sciences and associate professor of political science, as the commencement speaker. Sandal is an award-winning teacher, a respected researcher and an expert in foreign policy, international conflicts and Middle Eastern politics.
Sandal stressed to the graduates both the importance of human connections and making time for personal relationships, even when life gets busy.
“It is our hope that as you are building bridges and nurturing healthy and strong relationships, you will always remember how much you are loved at home at Ohio University,” Sandal said. “We hope that you will keep in touch and help us mentor the next generation of Bobcats.”
