Application names in Azure MFA will enhance security, improve user experience

The Office of Information Technology (OIT) is proud to announce that it will be adding application names to the Azure Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) number-matching prompt.

With this update, when users attempt to authenticate their credentials, the name of the application requesting authentication will appear on the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app screen. This work will be launched in time for the upcoming Fall 2023 semester.

For example, when users are prompted to authenticate while logging into the Workforce app, the app name “Workforce” will appear on the Microsoft Authenticator mobile app screen. The name indicates the app that is requesting authentication. If the user is not currently attempting to open the app named in the authenticator, then the request may be malicious.

This proposed change will enhance security for users authenticating with multiple applications. If you have any questions or other needs, please contact OIT’s Service Desk, or submit a ticket.  Please report any suspicious activity to Information Security at security@ohio.edu.
