Black Law Students Association returns to support Black and minority pre-law students

The National Black Law Students Association (NBLSA) returns to Ohio University this fall with the mission “to increase the number of culturally responsible Black and minority attorneys who excel academically, succeed professionally, and positively impact the community,” said Chapter President Hannah Louck.

Ohio University's Black Law Students Association is one of numerous NBLSA pre-law chapters across the country. The students hope to create a safe space to uplift Black and minority pre-law students as they navigate their time at Ohio University. The NBLSA Pre-Law Division is focused on increasing the law school application and admittance rate of Black and minority students through programming and professional development.

“The Center for Law, Justice and Culture and the pre-law community at Ohio University have presented me with many opportunities for growth and success during my undergrad time. I want this organization to help bridge the gap between the pre-law community and the minority students on campus,” said Louck, a senior pursuing a double major in history pre-law and sociology pre-law, with a Certificate in Law, Justice and Culture and a minor in political science.

Throughout the year, students will learn about internship opportunities, get connected to prelaw resources on campus, prepare for law school applications, and attend guest speakers, panels, workshops, and conventions.

The organization plans to host resume workshops, a panel discussing Senate Bill 83/House Bill 151, a voter registration cookout, and a headshot photoshoot in the coming weeks. The Black Law Students Association also will help sponsor this year's Wrongful Conviction Day event, “Impossible Choices: Innocence, People, and Dark Plea Deals,” on Oct. 3.

Chapter meetings take place weekly on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. in Bentley Hall 227. Any students interested in more information are encouraged to connect with the organization on Bobcat Connect or email Membership Coordinator Sariah Landers at sl801322@ohio.edu.
