Ohio University recognized as leader in data privacy, announces student award during Data Privacy Week

Ohio University has been recognized as one of only three universities in Ohio, and just 91 globally, chosen to participate in the prestigious International Association of Privacy Professionals (IAPP) Westin Scholar Award program.

To celebrate this distinction and nurture future privacy leaders, Ohio University and the J. Warren McClure School, in collaboration with OHIO's Chief Privacy Officer, are proud to announce its inaugural student privacy competition, to kick off annually during Data Privacy Week, Jan. 21-27.

Why it matters

Data privacy is a rapidly evolving field with immense career potential. This competition empowers students to explore their passion for privacy, develop cutting-edge solutions, and gain vital recognition from a leading industry organization. It aligns with Ohio University's commitment to experiential learning and preparing students for success in a data-driven world.

The challenge

Graduate students this year who have taken eligible courses on privacy or data security topics are invited to submit 500-word essays addressing the theme: "How do you see the privacy-related courses that you've taken at Ohio University shaping your professional goals and responsibilities?  Discuss specific ways you plan to advocate for or implement responsible data practices in your chosen field..." Entries can draw inspiration from local experiences, academic coursework, and future aspirations, fostering diverse perspectives and innovative thinking.

The prize

The winning student, Ohio University's Westin Scholar, will receive a $1,000 prize, a two-year IAPP membership, three complimentary exams for IAPP certifications, access to online training, and potential presentation at an IAPP conference. This award offers unparalleled opportunities for professional development and networking within the field of privacy, setting the winner on a path to excel in a burgeoning career arena.
