Catrin Latham

Introduce Yourself

Hi! My name is Catrin Latham, and I am originally from Springfield, Ohio. I have lived in Knoxville, Tennessee, since 2018 when I started my Political Science degree at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I am excited to graduate from the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Service’s Online Master of Public Administration (OMPA) program this May.

Tell us about your career

I currently work for East Tennessee Realtors as a Government Affairs Specialist and have worked there for the past two years. My role includes conducting committees, connecting with state and local government officials, organizing fundraising events for our Political Action Committee and applying for grants to be used across our 12-county coverage area.

Why did you choose the Voinovich School and the Online Master of Public Administration (OMPA) program?

I chose the online MPA program because it gave me the freedom to continue to work, while also allowing me to complete a degree that will benefit me in my current role and into the future. This program allowed me to have a concentration in state and local government which was very appealing as that is my main focus in my current role.

Can you share some details about your research or project work within your program? What have you learned from those experiences?

I have mainly focused on identifying ways in which theories or ideas throughout the different classes could impact and be used in my community. This has been possible through case studies and reflections that allowed for the incorporation of data from local projects.

What aspects of your program do you appreciate the most?

I appreciated being able to choose where and when to complete the coursework. Having the opportunity to work full time and not attend class at a certain time was extremely beneficial. This has allowed me to complete two years as a government affairs professional while also completing a degree that will benefit me in the future. I also appreciated getting to share this space with like-minded people who I have learned from throughout this program.

How have you applied what you are learning in your coursework in your career?

This program has allowed me to dig deeper into the intricate workings of state and local governments along with gaining a better understanding of the budgeting that goes into making the government function. I have brought this understanding into my workplace to ensure I am a more effective employee.

What's the best piece of leadership advice you've ever received?

Be unflappable and be willing to do whatever the organization may need to be successful.

Tell us about your future goals

In the future, I hope to take this degree and implement the things I have learned. This program has left me with lessons, both personally and professionally, and I look forward to seeing how they will manifest in the future.

Why do you believe the Voinovich School was the right choice for you?

The Voinovich School was the right choice for me due to the incredible leadership from the faculty and staff along with the flexibility that they have provided throughout the program. I am thankful to have found this program and had this great experience.
