Meet Melissa Minto: Champion for Student Success at Ohio University Eastern

At Ohio University Eastern, Melissa Minto stands as a beacon of support for students with disabilities, helping them navigate their academic and career paths with confidence and determination.

Minto is the Ohio College2Careers (Ohio C2C) Counselor at OHIO Eastern. She is part of the Opportunities for Ohioans with Disabilities (OOD) initiative. She provides a range of services to students, including career exploration, assistive technology assistance, résumé building, interview preparation, and connecting students to a vast network of employer partners.

"Our mission is to empower Ohioans with disabilities through employment, disability determination, and independence," Minto said. "Through the Ohio College2Careers (Ohio C2C) program, OOD partners with your college to ensure students with disabilities have the support they need to complete degrees, attain credentials, earn higher wages, and meet the demands of tomorrow’s workforce."

Minto collaborates closely with various campus departments to ensure all students are informed about the Ohio College2Careers program. Her goal is to promote disability awareness, inclusivity, and accessibility while advocating for student rights and needs.

"Continuing collaboration with Student Services is crucial," Minto said. "Together, we’ll promote disability awareness, inclusivity, accessibility, and advocate for student rights and needs."

OOD services go beyond job placement. They prepare students for the world of work and the next steps after graduation, helping them gain valuable work experience and access to state government employment through paid apprenticeships.

"Helping people find the resources to thrive in their chosen careers, fostering their development and self-empowerment, is incredibly fulfilling," Minto said.

Minto recognizes that many students with disabilities may hesitate to seek out OOD services due to concerns about stigma or self-reliance. Her advice to these students is clear and compassionate.

"Seeking assistance from OOD is a common and proactive step taken by many students to ensure their academic success and well-being," Minto said. "By overcoming hesitations and reaching out for assistance, you’re taking an important step toward realizing your full potential."
