Ohio University to host "Gender and Sexuality in the Midwest" conference

Ohio University’s History Department, in collaboration with the Central Region Humanities Center, presents the biennial conference, "Gender and Sexuality in the Midwest," taking place on Friday, Sept. 6, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., and Saturday, Sept. 7, from 9 a.m. to 5:45 p.m., at the Baker Center Theater. This thought-provoking event is free and open to the public.

The two-day conference will delve into the complex and often overlooked histories of gender and sexuality in the Midwest, examining how these themes have shaped the region's cultural and social fabric. The event promises a dynamic lineup of panels, lectures, and discussions that will engage both scholars and the broader community.

Dr. Katherine Jellison, historian and a prominent expert in U.S. women's and gender history, will host the conference. Dr. Jellison, a professor of history at Ohio University, is well-known for her research on women's roles in American society, including her highly regarded work on First Ladies and rural women. Her expertise will guide discussions, ensuring a robust exploration of the Midwest's gendered past and present.

The conference is part of the Central Region Humanities Center's ongoing mission to foster interdisciplinary scholarship and public engagement on the humanities in the Midwest. With sessions covering a wide range of topics, including LGBTQ+ histories, women’s suffrage, and the intersection of gender with race and class, attendees can expect a comprehensive exploration of how gender and sexuality have been experienced and understood in Midwestern contexts.
