Family Weekend filled with activities for Bobcats of all ages

Ohio University will welcome family members and friends to campus this week for the annual Family Weekend.

The Family Weekend events begin on Friday, Sept. 13, and continue through Sunday, Sept. 15. This year’s activities will include special events on and off campus for people of all ages. The events include a Bobcat Family Welcome, special performances at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium, outstanding food, Bobcat athletics events, and the annual Ohio Pawpaw Festival.

Please note, space may be limited for some of these events, but there are plenty of options throughout the weekend so families and Bobcats always have something to do.

Friday, Sept. 13 events

Community Thriving in Appalachia: How Teaching, Research and Service Contribute to Place-Making – This interactive talk will be held from 1-2:20 p.m. in Patton Hall Room 105.

Painting Plant Pots – 3-6 p.m. in Jefferson Hall 160.

Bobcat Family Welcome - Bobcat Families are invited to join Vice President for Student Affairs Lyn Redington, Dean of Students Kathy Fahl and other OHIO leaders on the iconic College Green for a Family Weekend welcome reception from 6:30 – 8 p.m.

The Ohio Pawpaw Festival - This all-weekend event at Lake Snowden near Albany highlights the rich history and future possibilities of the pawpaw through delectable food and beverages, and a full line-up of presentations and activities that cover pawpaw growing, cooking, genetics, medical use and other topics related to sustainability.  A shuttle will be available every 30 minutes beginning at 4:30 p.m. and continuing throughout the weekend (ending at 11:30 p.m. each evening). The shuttle will leave from outside of the first floor of the Baker University Center. Please note, tickets must be purchased in order to enter the festival.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 7 p.m. at the Athena Cinema.

Forbidden Broadway (OHIO Live) - This all-new satirical roast of over 30 Broadway hits features outrageous costumes, silly spoofs of the songs you know by heart and madcap impressions by a stellar cast. The performance will begin at 8 p.m. at the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

Saturday, Sept. 14 events

OHIO football players celebrate after a victory in Peden Stadium.

Family Weekends Day Hike - Join Outdoor Pursuits as you travel to Hocking Hills and experience some of the best hiking the state has to offer. For more information on details or to register, please visit this website.

Hazing Prevention 101: A Parent's Guide - Join the Division of Student Affairs leadership to learn about this hazing prevention and how to talk to your student about it from 10-11 a.m. at Baker University Center 240/242.

Family Photos: Photo Magnet Keepsake - Get a family photo printed on a branded 4x6 magnet to remember the weekend, from 10:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. on the first floor of Baker University Center.

Ceramics at the Cinema: Glazing Beer Steins - Participants will get a chance to decorate a bisqueware ceramic beer stein with ceramics glazes of their choice, beginning at 11 a.m. at the Athena Cinema.

Latty Patty: Save the Glass, Games, Grill and Buffet - Grab lunch and play some games at Latitude 39 in Baker University Center from 11 a.m. -2 p.m. The buffet portion of this special event will reopen from 5-9 p.m.

Meet Adoptable Dogs at Jackie'O's! Hosted by Bobcats of the Shelter Dogs – Noon until 2 p.m. at Jackie O’s Taproom.

OHIO Football vs. Morgan State – 3:30 p.m. at Peden Stadium.

Monty Python and the Holy Grail – 7 p.m. at the Athena Cinema.

SNL’s James Austin Johnson and Heidi Gardner (OHIO Live) – The two Saturday Night Live cast members will perform at OHIO beginning at 8 p.m. in the Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium.

NPHC's Black Out Party - Join NPHC for a bash that will feature a DJ, dance floor, and a good time. Dress in all black for this free event that begins at 9 p.m. in the Baker University Center Ballroom.

Ohio Pawpaw Festival – Continues at Lake Snowden.

Sunday, Sept. 15 events

Bingo and Bagels: Hosted by University Program Council – 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. in Baker University Center 240/242.

Hispanic Heritage Month Cookout - Bring your appetite, your friends, and your love for good food and great company. We’ll have music, games, and plenty of fun to make this a memorable day for everyone. The event begins at noon and continues until 3 p.m. at the South Beach.

OHIO Field Hockey vs. Saint Louis – Noon at Pruitt Field.

OHIO Soccer vs. Oakland – 1 p.m. at Chessa Field.

Ohio Pawpaw Festival – Continues at Lake Snowden.

Upcoming Family Weekends

Four times each year, Ohio University welcomes families and friends to reconnect with their college students on the Athens Campus for special Family Weekends. These weekends offer a wide range of activities, from sporting events to outdoor adventures to concerts and performing arts. The next three Family Weekends will be:

  • Dads Weekend will be held Nov. 1-3, 2024.
  • Sibs Weekend will be held Feb. 7-9, 2025.
  • Moms Weekend will be held April 4-6, 2025.
