Business process and technology assessment nearing conclusion

Earlier this year, Ohio University began an assessment of business processes and technologies in the areas of human resources, finance and student administration.

This assessment, which represents the first phase of a comprehensive effort to modernize our Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems and related capabilities, is nearing completion, with results expected in November 2024. The findings will inform decisions on replacing existing technologies, optimizing business practices, and enhancing the student, employee and community experience.

Assessment details

The assessment includes data analysis, interviews and surveys of Ohio University faculty and staff to understand how systems are currently used, identify areas for increased efficiency, assess current technological capabilities, analyze potential risks and evaluate OHIO’s readiness for change. It focuses on both the effectiveness of business processes (hiring, onboarding, paying invoices, enrolling for classes, etc.) and the effectiveness of their implementation in a system (Oracle E-Business Suite, Workforce, Concur, BobcatBuy, PeopleSoft, Faculty and Advising Center, OCEAN, etc.).

The assessment is governed by a steering committee of University leaders in partnership with the Huron Consulting Group, a firm with expertise specific to higher education administrative systems. The steering committee and Huron are currently reviewing data collected during the assessment to determine the resources and costs required to replace the existing systems and develop a roadmap and list of projects required for a successful transformation effort.

Next steps

The assessment aims to develop a comprehensive, long-term strategy for modernizing the University’s ERP ecosystems. Once the assessment concludes, the results will be shared with the University community.

Next steps in the process will include determining optimal timing for this initiative to begin, identifying resources and choosing specific technology platforms.

Thank you to all the faculty and staff who contributed to the assessment so far -- your input has been invaluable. For more details on the assessment, visit the ERP Assessment website.
