OHIO Mock Trial had a strong showing at the University of Rochester’s fifteenth annual Yellowjacket Invitational November 9-10. Both teams notched several wins and split decisions over impressive programs including Amherst College, the University of Pittsburgh, The College of New Jersey, and the University at Buffalo. Three individual students received recognition for outstanding performances as both attorneys and witnesses.
In mock trial competitions, every trial is judged by two judges who record their scores on a ballot, and it takes both judges' ballots to win a trial.
OHIO Green’s defense side had two split decisions with the University at Buffalo and the University of Pittsburgh, whereas their plaintiff side prevailed over Amherst. OHIO White’s plaintiff side was undefeated and had victories over Amherst and The College of New Jersey.
"Outstanding" performances
Three students received awards for outstanding performance, with Katie Buschle and Leighton Heiner being recognized as outstanding attorneys and Sydney Gross as an outstanding witness. Buschle was ranked as the top attorney by every judge in the trials she performed in, notching a perfect 20 rankings. This feat was last accomplished in 2022 by an OHIO competitor.
“I’m honored to have received an attorney award at our competition this weekend,” Buschle said. “I had a wonderful experience at Rochester and am so lucky to be able to work and spend time with my amazing teammates and best friends. I’m so glad the work paid off and can’t wait for our next competition at Regionals!”
“I’m thankful for this award and the opportunity to compete with such a wonderful, talented, and smart team,” Heiner said.
The team will now prepare for the American Mock Trial Association circuit in the spring semester, refining their materials and practicing to compete against regional rivals in February.
