Ohio University Southern hosts screening of documentary honoring beloved TV icon Mr. Cartoon

Ohio University Southern is bringing the tri-state community together for a special screening of "Hey Cartooners!," a documentary produced by West Virginia Public Broadcasting that celebrates the legacy of Jule Huffman, better known as Mr. Cartoon.

The event will take place on Sunday, Dec. 3, at 6:30 p.m. in the Rotunda on the Ironton campus. This screening is free and open to the public.

For nearly 40 years, Mr. Cartoon entertained children across the region on WSAZ-TV, fostering fun, creativity and values like kindness, respect and gratitude. "Hey Cartooners!" tells the story of Huffman’s enduring impact on generations of viewers through interviews with fans, colleagues, and family members.

“Mr. Cartoon was an ever-present part of my childhood,” said Christopher Barnhart, WVPB director of video production. “When I was hired at WVPB, the only real story I knew about West Virginia was Jule Huffman. I am extremely grateful and proud that we were able to tell his story.”

“Mr. Cartoon played a huge role for many of us who grew up in central and southern West Virginia and watched after school,” said Eddie Isom, WVPB executive director. “Not only did he and Beeper entertain us, but he taught us to say please and thank you and to be respectful. He made a difference in many people’s lives.”

“Jule epitomized what WSAZ was about then and still is today -- service to community and engaging people,” added Tony Cavalier, WSAZ chief meteorologist.

Ohio University Southern is proud to offer this local screening to honor Huffman’s legacy and share his story with the Ironton community.
